
Steven Shapiro
An arbitrator since 1999, Steven Shapiro has been a trusted advisor & attorney in private practice, earning a mid-career master’s degree in civil engineering, then working on construction sites to eventually become a project manager and project executive wih national general contractors. To complement his work, Steven has been a construction law professor at the American University Washington College of Law, author of professional books on design and construction, and invited presenter at national conferences. In 2012, the American Institute of Architects recognized his body of work in service and contribution to design and construction and named him an Honorary Member, a rare distinction for an attorney.
In tandem with construction law, Steven has pursued topics in commercial real estate, most notably in hospitality and tourism law. Now properly recognized as a legal discipline for the many intricate economic connections, Steven launched the Hospitality & Tourism Law program at the Washington College of Law. As chair of the program, he directs the studies for U.S. law and business students, plus he teaches these topics abroad, most notably in Europe and South America. Steven is a contributing author to a noted hotel law desktop reference book.
With his academic and arbitration background, Steven is working with the law faculty of the University of Lausanne to organize, direct, and deliver a joint international conference on the Impact of Covid-19 on International Arbitration to be held in Switzerland. As an integral part of the conference, he is the named title editor on a book contract for the assembled papers and commentary.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, on the roster panel for the American Arbitration Association, and member of arbitration institutions in New York, London, Dubai, and Singapore. In arbitration matters, Steven Shapiro brings a measured and skilled view of the intricate legal relationships, the realities of complicated construction projects, and impeccable integrity to the parties and fidelity to the facts to deliver concise, reasoned, and resolute decisions.
